Early Life

Allen Onyema was born and raised in Benin into the family of Michael Onyema and his mother, Helen Onyema. Although originally from the Eastern part of Nigeria, he spent a significant portion of his formative years in Benin.

During his upbringing, he attended several schools within his neighborhood, including St. Anthony’s Secondary School in Azia, Urhobo College in Effurun, and the prestigious Government College in Ugheli.

In 1984, Onyema gained admission to the University of Ibadan, where he pursued a degree in law. Three years into his course, he transitioned to the Nigeria Law School, ultimately being called to the bar after one year of study there.

Career

Allen embarked on his professional journey as a lawyer, encountering initial challenges in navigating the field. Despite familial expectations for him to pursue opportunities in the oil and gas sector, particularly with the assistance of his uncle, Capt J. O. W Onyema, a respected figure in the maritime industry who offered him a position at Shell, Allen remained steadfast in his desire to forge his path.

Disinclined towards the oil and gas industry, Allen relocated to Lagos, where he faced temporary housing challenges before fate intervened. Serendipitously, he crossed paths with the late Chief Vincent Amobi Nwizugbo, who extended an employment opportunity at his legal firm on the island. Allen’s exceptional performance in a high-profile court case earned him a monthly salary of N500.

While honing his legal skills, Allen gradually delved into the real estate sector, seizing entrepreneurial opportunities alongside his legal career. Eventually, he decided to part ways with Chief Vincent to focus on his burgeoning ventures.
