Biography

Akhona Zenith Makalima (born March 27, 1988) is one of the few listed African women’s football referees who has officiated in FIFA, PSL, SAFA, and SASOL Women’s League.

She is also recognized as a model and also an event manager.

Early Life

Akhona hails from the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, where she spent her childhood assisting her grandfather, Robert Makalima, with the care of his sheep flock in the rural area where she was raised.

Information regarding her biological father is currently unavailable, as Akhona’s mother, Vuyokazi, divorced and remarried her stepfather, Mbuyisa Dalasile.

From a young age, Akhona’s love for sports was evident, even amidst the presence of her five siblings. As she grew, this passion only intensified, ultimately leading her to make the decision to pursue a career in the field.

While attending Msobomvu Secondary School, she was a dedicated member of the school community and actively participated in a variety of sports, including softball, volleyball, athletics, and soccer.

She gained admission into a higher institution, where she chose to study human resources management at King Hintsa FET College in 2007. 

Career

Akhona nurtured a passion for football from a young age, with the ambition of becoming a professional player. She applied to the FET provincial team through dedication to her skill and was selected based on her talent and enthusiasm. She was soon appointed as the assistant captain of the team.

After completing her diploma, she returned to her hometown and joined Litha FC. There, she was inspired after coming across a female referee, Yonela Mahamba. There she determined to change her career and focus on refereeing.

In August 2011, she began her officiating career after being introduced to the team by the referees’ development officer in Chris Hani District. Her debut whistle was blown at the Chris Hani District in Eziphunzana in East London, where she earned her first trophy as the top referee.

She was granted the honor of serving as an official during the 2012-2013 Vodacom League campaign. Her debut on the international stage came in 2015 when she was selected to officiate the Olympic match between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

She has also been appointed to officiate at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Personal Life

The 35-year-old woman is a single mother who became pregnant during her teenage years. Despite her challenges, she has dedicated herself to her career and her child. 

Despite her busy schedule and responsibilities, she has not expressed any interest in pursuing a romantic relationship in the near future, instead choosing to focus on her child and career development. 

She is also an attractive woman who successfully balanced motherhood and career.
