Sharif Said Juma (born June 12, 1997) is a Tanzanian musician, singer, and songwriter known professionally by his stage name, Jay Melody.
He is recognized widely for his distinctive sound that seamlessly blends African rhythms, soulful melodies, and contemporary pop elements. He is popularly known for his hit songs like Nakupenda and Sugar. He has become one of the most skilled and in-demand musicians in Tanzania and has garnered a substantial following throughout the continent.
Jay Melody was born and raised in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by his parent, alongside his siblings. He is the last of his family. His early exposure to music was attributed to his family’s musical inclinations, and his father, Mr Said Juma, a well-known musician in Tanzania. Growing up, he was exposed to various musical genres and styles, which eventually sparked his love for music. He is currently 26 years old.
Jay developed an early passion for music and soon became interested in singing and songwriting. As a child, he spent hours composing songs that he would perform to entertain his family and friends, even while he was still in primary school. He often sang and performed his compositions during school events and talent shows, where he quickly gained a reputation for his musical talent.
Jay began practising daily and dedicated most of his leisure time to composing songs, led by his father’s guidance.
He soon became well-known in his locality for his talent. He began performing at local events, gaining a small following of fans captivated by his unique voice and soulful melodies.
Jay’s educational journey began at Muhalitani Primary School, located in the slam area of Tandale in Dar es Salaam. He then continued his studies at Bunju Secondary School. Upon completing his secondary education, Jay’s talent and potential led him to the Tanzanian House of Talent, where he was enrolled without delay.
Jay Melody’s journey in the music industry began in earnest in 2013 when he decided to participate in the Bongo Star Search competition, one of Tanzania’s most popular music talent shows. Though he did not emerge as the winner, Jay’s exceptional talent caught the attention of music industry insiders, who recognized his unique style and potential. He was quickly apprehended and offered a record deal contract which automatically transcended his musical career.
In 2014, Jay released his debut single, “Ndonga Remix,” which was widely acclaimed by music enthusiasts across Tanzania. The song showcased his musical prowess, which seamlessly blended African rhythms, soulful melodies, and modern pop sounds. He followed this up with several other successful singles, such as “Kwetu,” “Niamini,” and “Zilipendwa,” which further cemented his status as a rising star in the industry.
In 2017, He released his much-anticipated debut album, “Makulusa,” which featured collaborations with some of the most prominent musicians in Tanzania, including Harmonize and Christian Bella. The album was a massive success and established Jay Melody as a force to be reckoned with in the Tanzanian music scene. With its catchy beats, inspiring lyrics, and unique sound, “Makulusa” became an instant hit, earning him critical acclaim and numerous accolades.
Today, Jay Melody is regarded as one of the most talented and sought-after musicians in Tanzania, with a loyal fanbase across the continent. He continues to produce hit after hit, captivating audiences with his exceptional talent and inspiring musical style.
He has worked with several African artists, including Diamond Platnumz, Jux, Alikiba, Nandy, Marioo, Rayvanny, Young Lunya and Many others.
