The seriousness of the situation escalated when it was discovered that Grantham had also plotted a sinister scheme to assassinate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Rideau Cottage. He diverted from this plan, however, and instead embarked on a 201-kilometer drive with intentions that included potential shootings at Simon Fraser University or the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver.

Grantham’s disturbing actions were compounded by his struggles with substance abuse, which impaired his judgment and behavior. After initially being charged with first-degree murder, Grantham entered a guilty plea for second-degree murder on September 23, 2022.
